Keeping a Clean Social Media Presence For a Successful Future
06/05/2017
Though social media was your favorite place to showcase party pictures and debauchery during your time at college, it’s also the first place your employers are going to scan when you apply for a job. A Career Builder survey earlier in 2017 confirmed that over 60% of employers check out social media profiles before hiring. Employers want to know you have the potential to be a serious employee with a steadfast work ethic. In order to convince them, your social media needs to line up with your career story.
The first step: Google yourself
Google is a great way to know what kind of content is associated with your name today. Try and do it through the incognito Google feature to ensure you’re seeing what employers will see. What are the results? If horrible photos are popping up from your Facebook page, it’s time you go back through your profile and delete these sourced photos.
Next: Facebook privacy settings
This one is a little more difficult. It looks suspicious to employers if you make your Facebook completely unsearchable. Instead, take the time to use Facebook’s extensive privacy features, making certain photo albums and photos of you not viewable to people outside a designated group.
Additionally, flat out delete all of the incriminating and distasteful college photos. It’s not a good look in the real world.
Lastly: Twitter
We don’t tend to think of Twitter as a place an employer will visit – but trust us, that is incorrect. Twitter is a very telling platform for your personal likes/dislikes and quirks. If you fired out a lot of angry political tweets this past fall, you may want to make your account private.
Give yourself a social media presence you would be proud to share with new coworkers. Stick to that standard.
