5 Tips for Preparing for College Graduation

  06/21/2017

Congratulations! If you’re reading this, it means you’re either enrolled in a higher education institution, or you’re staring down graduation sometime this month. It’s probably been a long 4-years, full of term papers, theses, all-nighters, and never-ending reading assignments for homework.

You can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel. Here are your 5 final steps for getting to graduation:

  1. Documentation: Just when you thought your days of paperwork were behind you, make sure you receive your application to graduate and confirmation from your major department that you are cleared to walk across the stage.
  2. Resume: The second you graduate; you are automatically employable in major fields today. Get your resume spruced up and ready for e-mailing so you don’t fall into a post-graduate slump all summer long.
  3. Return Outstanding Items: You’d be surprised how many students have their degrees withheld because they never returned a laptop or book to the university library. Colleges mean business, and they want their property back before you leave the premise forever.
  4. Summer Internship: Even better if it’s a job, try and line up an internship that can hopefully launch into a full-time position this summer. Although hanging out all summer long may sound appealing, it looks badly on your resume when employers see you spent 4-months doing absolutely nothing productive.
  5. Enjoy It: Capture the moment of your final days at college. These are the memories you’ll tell your kids and grandkids about decades later. Be sure to slow down and smell the roses while you enjoy your graduation ceremony and celebrating with your cherished college friends.

Graduating college doesn’t have to be a totally serious business. Be sure to pat yourself on the back – you did it!
