How to Mention Vacation Plans During an Interview
07/14/2017
Life happens, and it can be dangerously hard to predict sometimes. Many people plan a vacation 1-year away, lose a job, and find themselves interviewing just a month before their big excursion. It’s unavoidable sometimes, and the tough topic needs to be brought about during the interview. Keeping it to yourself will put you on a bad path your very first day at your new job. Sometimes, it’s hard to overcome something like that.
Honesty is the best policy, and we’re going to walk through how to mention your vacation plans during an interview.
Timing
You don’t need to drop the vacation bomb during your preliminary interviews. That’s a quick way to be dropped from the running. Wait until you make it to the end and your employer asks you: how soon can you start? This is the perfect time to let them know about your planned trip. Don’t feel like you have to tell them what the trip is for exactly, either.
Phrasing
Keep the vacation brief and fact-filled when you announce it. No one wants to hear you run around in circles trying to justify why it’s ok you’re going on a vacation. Factually state the dates, when you will return, and what date you are ready to resume work. These people don’t want to know about your 7-day Caribbean getaway. Keep it to yourself.
Get it Over With
It’s not fun dreading a chat with your employer. You probably have a nightmare every single night about it, and dream up the worst-case scenario each time. Do yourself a favor and get it over with. The soonest possible opportunity that presents itself should be taken. You’ll feel much better afterwards.
Vacationing is a normal part of life. No employer is going to be shocked by your plans. Be honest, brief, and to-the-point.
